The Art Union of London had been founded by Pocock and Godwin in as a subscription society to encourage young artists and the appreciation of art; which it did by publishing a monthly periodical, books, prints and reproductions of sculpture, by organising competitions and by campaigning for the subsidising of public exhibitions.
The Art Union of London was established infollowing the establishment of similar organisations in Edinburgh and Liverpool. It described its aim as being "to aid in extending the love of the Arts of Design, and to give Encouragement to Artists beyond that afforded by the patronage of individuals.".
